Terms of Endearment

Odd sighed, shoving his hands in his pockets as he shuffled down the corridor. Looking up, he spotted his sister leaving her dorm. He let out a groan, crawling towards her on his knees, clinging to her leg. She yelped with surprise.

"Gem." Odd whined, tightening his hold on his sister's leg.

Gem sighed, "Yes, Freak?"

Odd buried his head into the crook of his sister's knee, his complaints muffled into the fabric of her jeans. Gem rolled her eyes, maneuvering her way back into her dorm, her brother refusing to release his grip. Gem shook him off. Odd took a seat on his sister's small cot.

"What's wrong, dare I ask?" Gem inquired, regarding her brother with an arched eyebrow.

"Kiwi!" Odd quipped.

"Is he sick?" Gem asked.

"No," Odd vigorously shook his head, "my friends are keeping him in the factory."

"Shame." Gem clicked her tongue, "I suppose you need new friends."

Odd glared at his sister. "You just don't like my friends."

Gem chuckled, "Lies. I love Ulcer, Yummy, Germ, and Princess. They're great."

The siblings laughed for a moment before Odd paused, musing. "You know-"

"I know everything, Odd."

Odd snorted, "You don't have a stupid nickname for Aelita."

Gem flushed a sudden, vivid crimson. "Uh, well, first of all, they're terms of endearment. And uh-" she stammered.

Odd shrugged, "Aelita doesn't give much to work with."

"Speaking of Aelita, she has a date with Jeremie tonight, doesn't she?" Gem asked, her tone soft.

Odd's eyebrows rose, "She does, why?"

Gem shrugged, "Just curious."

"Oh, I'm so nervous!" Aelita giggled, flitting around her room like an excitable bird.

Yumi chuckled, "That's perfectly normal."

"But it's so odd," Aelita chattered, "I see him every day, and yet all of a sudden I'm a wreck! Did this happen to you on your first date with Ulrich?" she inquired innocently.

Yumi blushed, averting her eyes, "Yes, it was exactly like that." she admitted, smiling.

Yumi gasped, realizing the time. "Oh man, I gotta go. My dad's gonna kill me!" Yumi rushed out the door of Aelita's dorm, throwing a quick, "Good luck!" over her shoulder.

Aelita sighed, sitting in front of her vanity table.

"Where's the fire?"

Aelita jumped, realizing that Gem had poked her head into the dorm.

"If I knew for a fact that Kid Flash didn't wear black, I'd think he just blew passed me." Gem smirked, shutting the door behind her.

"That was Yumi, late for her curfew." Aelita laughed. Gem. The older girl who gave Aelita so much confusion in her life, yet could always make her laugh.

"You look gorgeous, Aelita." Gem said, placing her hands on Aelita's back.

Aelita smiled, staring at Gem in her mirror, something inside her longing to cover one of the small, soft hands resting on her shoulders.

"Hold on," Gem snapped Aelita from her reverie as she spun her around on her chair to face her.

Aelita bit her lip, trying to repress a blush as Gem's warmth breath fluttered onto her face.

"Your mascara's a bit smudged." Gem smiles, softly rubbing Aelita's cheek.

Aelita felt her face grow hot as Gem's got close enough for their noses to nearly brush against each other.

Blood pounding in her ears, instinct possessing her, Aelita leaned forward, closing the gap between the pair. She felt Gem gasp against her lips, then meld onto her mouth. She rested her hand on the younger girl's cheek. Gem broke away, kissing Aeita's forehead, then her nose, causing Aelita to giggle, before returning to her mouth. Gem pulled away abruptly, much to Aelita's confusion.

She bit her lip. "I have to go." she whispered, "I'm sorry, Princess."

Aelita visibly deflated, "Please don't." she begged softly.

Gem smiled sadly, walking out the door. Aelita's eyes followed her, along with her heart.

Gem collapsed against the door to Aelita's dorm, her fingers pressed her lips, and her emotions in a frenzy.
